A heat pump both heats and cools. In summer it works like an air conditioner; in winter it runs in reverse and pulls heat into the house. It is a very efficient alternative to electric heat, and in a climate like ours it gets paired with a backup heat source for the genuinely cold stretches.

After that: get the annual maintenance done, put in a programmable thermostat (every degree you drop for seven hours a day is about 1% off the bill), keep supply and return vents clear of furniture and rugs, close vents in rooms nobody uses, and run ceiling fans clockwise in winter to push warm air back down.
